Why Can’T I Smell My Air Wick?
What is Air Wick?
Air Wick is a popular air freshener brand that has been around since the 1940s. It was originally developed in England by a company called Reckitt & Colman, now known as Reckitt Benckiser. Air Wick offers a wide range of air freshening products including aerosol sprays, electric plug-in diffusers, essential oils, and more.
Air Wick aerosol sprays provide an instant fragrance boost. They contain perfume oils suspended in a propellant, which is released as a fine mist when sprayed. The perfumed mist lingers in the air for a while before dissipating. Air Wick spray cans allow you to quickly scent a room.
Air Wick also offers plug-in diffusers, which provide continuous fragrance over weeks or months. These contain scented oils in a wick or absorptive material. As the oils evaporate over time, they fill the surrounding air with fragrance. Plug-in diffusers scent your environment consistently and automatically. Many have multiple scent settings and timers.
In addition to sprays and diffusers, Air Wick offers essential oils and reed diffusers. The essential oils can be added to existing Air Wick products or used on their own in aromatherapy. Reed diffusers involve scented oils absorbed in sticks placed in a decorative jar. Air Wick aims to provide air care solutions for any preference and situation.
Common reasons Air Wick may not smell
There are several common reasons an Air Wick product may seem to have little or no scent:
Product is old or expired: Air Wick products have a shelf life. Over time, the fragrance oils can lose their potency and therefore become less aromatic. Check the expiration date on the product packaging or refill to see if it is past its prime.
Nozzle is clogged on spray products: Air Wick spray cans and other aerosol products use a pressurized nozzle to disperse the fragrance. If this nozzle becomes clogged with dried oils, the spray will be blocked. Try cleaning the nozzle with a pin or needle to unclog it.
Dirt/dust blocking diffusion of fragrance: Air Wick plugins and other diffusers rely on air circulation to spread the scent. But dirt and dust buildup can prevent optimal airflow. Clean diffuser vents and fan blades so fragrance isn’t trapped inside.
Scent refills empty on plugins: Many Air Wick plugins use refill cartridges or bottles of fragrance oils. Check your plugin to see if the refill is empty and needs to be replaced for continuous aroma.
Checking the expiration date
Air Wick products like aerosol sprays, plug-in oils, and wax melts all have expiration dates printed on their packaging. This date indicates when the product’s scent and efficacy start to diminish. Locating and checking this date is one of the first troubleshooting steps when your Air Wick stops smelling strongly.
For aerosol sprays, the expiration date is usually printed on the bottom of the can. Plug-in oil expiration dates can be found on the oil refill bottles. The lifespan for these refills ranges from 4-8 weeks once inserted in the plugin. Wax melt expiration dates are on the clamshell packaging or the underside of the wax melt cubes. Their shelf life is approximately 1-2 years.
If your Air Wick is past its expiration date, the fragrance oils will have started to degrade. The scent throw will steadily diminish over time past the expiration date. Replacing an expired product with a new one should restore the aroma.
Unclogging spray nozzles
If your Air Wick spray doesn’t seem to be spraying properly, the nozzle may be clogged. This can prevent the fragrance from being released effectively. There are a couple of easy methods to try unclogging a clogged spray nozzle:
Soaking in warm water – Fill a bowl or cup with warm water and place the entire Air Wick spray unit into the water. Let it soak for 5-10 minutes. This will help soften any built up residue in the nozzle so it can be cleared out easier. After soaking, take it out, aim it away from you and test spray. The warm water should help clear the clog.
Using a pin to clear blockages – If soaking doesn’t work, try using a thumbtack, straight pin or needle to gently poke inside the nozzle hole and loosen any blockages. Be very careful when doing this to avoid damaging the plastic sprayer head. Insert the pin a few times and test the sprayer again to see if the clog was cleared.
Cleaning diffusers and plug-ins
If you use electric plug-in diffusers or reed diffusers for your Air Wick, it’s important to clean them regularly so they continue diffusing fragrance effectively. Dust and grime can build up on the diffuser over time, blocking the scent from dispersing properly. Follow these tips for cleaning Air Wick diffusers and plug-ins:
Dusting electric plug-ins – Unplug the unit and use a dry cloth or cotton swab to gently remove any dust, dirt or debris that has accumulated on the diffuser or around the vents. This will allow the fragrance to diffuse freely again.
Wiping down with damp cloth – For a deeper clean, unplug the diffuser and wipe it down with a damp cloth. Avoid getting moisture in any of the electrical components. Let it fully dry before plugging it back in.
Changing scent cartridges – Scent cartridges have a limited lifespan and will lose potency over time. Replace them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, usually every 4-8 weeks. Insert a new cartridge to restore the fragrance.
Regular cleaning and cartridge replacement will help your Air Wick plug-in or reed diffuser continue working effectively. If the scent is still weak after cleaning, it may be time to try a different Air Wick product or fragrance.
Maximizing airflow
Air Wick products require good airflow in order to properly disperse the fragrance. Here are some tips for maximizing airflow:
For spray products, avoid placing them in enclosed areas like cabinets or behind objects. The spray needs open space to propel the fragrance molecules into the air. Place spray cans out in the open, such as on countertops or shelves.
For plug-in and electric diffusers, make sure there is open space around the unit for airflow. Don’t shove a plug-in diffuser behind furniture or in an enclosed shelf. Place it out in the open on a table or counter.
Avoid areas with limited airflow in general, such as closets, corners and enclosed cabinets. The fragrance will not circulate well in cramped spaces.
Experiment with different placements in open, high airflow areas. Sometimes moving a diffuser just a few feet can make a difference in how well the scent disperses.
Make sure you are following the manufacturer’s recommendations for product placement as well.
Developing ‘nose blindness’
One potential reason you may not be able to smell your Air Wick is something called olfactory fatigue, also known as “nose blindness.” This occurs when you are exposed to the same scent for an extended period of time, causing your nose to temporarily lose sensitivity to that particular smell.
The receptors in your nose essentially get overwhelmed and shut down, making you unable to detect the smell anymore. This is a normal protective mechanism to prevent overstimulation.
The good news is that nose blindness is temporary. Here are some tips to reset your sense of smell:
- Take a break from the scent for a few days. Give your nose a chance to “reset” and regain sensitivity.
- Open windows or go outside to clear out the scented air.
- Sniff strong smells like citrus, coffee beans or menthol to overstimulate and revive your nose.
- Use unscented products for a while before trying Air Wick again.
- Switch your Air Wick scent to something entirely different.
If you give your nose a break from constant exposure, you should regain your ability to smell the Air Wick fragrance again.
Trying a Different Scent
One reason you may not smell your Air Wick product is due to olfactory fatigue, also known as nose blindness. This occurs when you’ve become overly exposed to a particular fragrance to the point where you can no longer detect the scent.
The good news is that simply switching to a new Air Wick fragrance can help overcome nose blindness. Air Wick offers a wide variety of fragrances to choose from including botanicals, baked goods, fruits, mints, citrus, woods, and florals.
Consider exploring their range of seasonal and limited edition scents as well. They regularly debut special fragrances for spring, summer, fall, and the holidays to keep things exciting. Trying something new and unfamiliar is a great way to reawaken your sense of smell.
With dozens of Air Wick fragrances to pick from, you’re sure to find one that you can smell and enjoy. Some of their most popular scents include Linen Fresh, Hawaiian Breeze, Lavender and Chamomile, and Apple Cinnamon.
Don’t give up if you think your Air Wick has lost its scent – simply switching to a new fragrance can often do the trick.
Using essential oils
Essential oils can be a great way to add natural fragrance to your home. Many people find essential oils to have health benefits as well. Some of the benefits of using essential oils include:
- They can help create a calming environment – Essential oils like lavender and chamomile are known for their relaxing properties.
- They can promote feelings of invigoration – Citrus scents like lemon, grapefruit, and orange can create an energizing atmosphere.
- They can enhance mood – Floral scents like jasmine and rose can have mood-lifting effects.
- They can help purify air – Oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, and peppermint are thought to have air purifying properties.
You can pair essential oils with Air Wick products for added fragrance and benefits:
- Use essential oils in Air Wick plug-in refills – Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the Air Wick oil refill before inserting it into the plug-in.
- Include essential oils in spray bottles – Add several drops of essential oil to water in an Air Wick spray bottle and shake before use.
- Apply essential oils to Air Wick wax melts – Place a couple drops of essential oil on an Air Wick wax melt cube before melting.
Experiment with different essential oil blends and Air Wick products to create custom scents for your home.
When to Contact the Manufacturer
If you’ve tried the troubleshooting tips above and your Air Wick product still has little or no scent, it may be defective. Contact the manufacturer to report the issue and potentially get a replacement.
Start by locating the customer service contact info on the Air Wick website or product packaging. You’ll likely need to provide the product name, UPC or batch code, and receipt if you still have it. Explain the issue in detail, noting what you’ve tried already to resolve it. The customer service agent can then help determine if your product is defective and walk you through the replacement process.
If the Air Wick is within its warranty period, you may be eligible for a free replacement. Outside of the warranty, you may still get a courtesy replacement or refund. Be prepared to mail back the defective product if requested by the manufacturer.
Calling the customer service hotline is usually the quickest way to get help with a defective Air Wick. However, you can also reach out via email or the contact form on their website. Include photos showing the issue if possible.
With proof of purchase and clear details about the lack of scent, the manufacturer should be able to resolve the issue promptly. Be patient but persistent in getting a satisfactory outcome. A quality air freshener product should perform as expected.
