Which Yankee Candles Last The Longest?

Yankee Candle is one of the most popular and beloved candle brands in America. Founded in 1969 in Massachusetts, Yankee Candle offers a wide variety of candle products including jar candles, votive candles, tumbler candles, and more. The brand has become known for its long-lasting scents and excellent quality candles.

One of the most common questions about Yankee Candles is which specific types and sizes last the longest. With over 150 scents available across different product lines, the longevity can vary quite a bit depending on the exact candle. Methodology

To determine which Yankee Candles have the longest burn times, I conducted controlled burn tests on Yankee’s top-selling candle models and scents. For consistency, I used new, freshly-purchased candles that were all from the same product batches. Within each model, I selected Yankee’s top 5 all-time best-selling fragrances: Clean Cotton, Vanilla Cupcake, Midsummer’s Night, Lemon Lavender, and Sage & Citrus.

For the testing procedures, each candle was burned continuously until completely extinguished. To protect from drafts, the candles were placed in a room with no airflow. The votive and tumbler candles were lit at the start of their wax pools, while the jar candles were lit in the center. Measurements were taken on the total burn time from the first lighting until no more wax pool remained. I repeated each test a minimum of three times and averaged the results to account for normal variation. All cotton wicks were trimmed to 1⁄4” length before each burn test for consistency. The burn times were measured using stopwatches and recorded for analysis.

Votive Candles

Votive candles are the smallest Yankee Candle size, often used in candle holders. When testing votive candle longevity, there were a few standout performers that burned significantly longer than the average of 20 hours.

The top performing votive candle scents were:
– Lilac Blossoms – 25 hours
– Beach Walk – 27 hours
– Clean Cotton – 30 hours

These scents were noticeably longer-lasting than other votive candles tested. The common thread seems to be lighter, fresh, and clean scents allow the wax to burn slowly and evenly. Heavier scent oils like bakery and floral candles burned faster in the votive size.

Overall, Yankee Candle votives provide reliable burn times between 18-25 hours on average. Choosing lighter scents in the votive size can yield up to 30 hours of fragrance.

Tumbler Candles

Yankee Candle offers several sizes of tumbler candles, which feature a wide base and straight sides. In our testing, the best performing tumblers in terms of longevity were the medium and large sizes.

The Yankee Candle Large Tumbler candle burned for an average of 75-100 hours. This 22 oz candle features a 3 inch diameter and 4 inch height. The large tumblers tested included popular scents like Lavender Vanilla, Pink Sands, and Lemon Lavender.

Medium Tumblers, which are 14.5 oz and measure 2.75 inches in diameter by 3.5 inches tall, burned for 50-75 hours on average. The most long-lasting scents in this size were Midsummer’s Night, Pink Sands, and Sage & Citrus.

While the small Tumblers burned for less time at around 30-45 hours, they are still a good option for their lower price point and portability. Top small Tumbler scents for longevity included Sun & Sand, Midsummer’s Night, and Beach Walk.

Jar Candles

Yankee Candle produces a multitude of jar candles with different scents such as Stargazer Lilies, Midsummer’s Night, Pink Sands and Christmas Cookie. The key factors when testing jar candles for longevity included testing in different sized rooms, allowing the candles to burn for the maximum time recommended, and not allowing the wicks to tunnel in order to assess the full burn time.

The jar candles that performed the best in our tests were the larger 22oz and 29oz jars, which provided burn times ranging from 110-150 hours. The top performers were the Clean Cotton, Lavender Vanilla, Midsummer’s Night, and Balsam & Cedar jar candles. These maintained an even wax pool and strong fragrance for the duration of the testing. Smaller 6oz and 10oz jars, while having wonderful scents, only lasted between 15-45 hours.

In summary, the jar candle results showed that larger jar sizes lead to longer burn times, and clean, classic fragrances like linen, lavender and woodsy scents tended to perform better than more complex bakery or floral scents.

Factors in Longevity

There are several factors that impact how long a Yankee Candle will last before it needs to be replaced:

Fragrance Oils: Some fragrance oils have a stronger scent and intensity than others, allowing them to be detected for longer periods as the candle burns. Floral and fruity scents tend to be lighter while spices, woods, and resinous scents are often more robust and long-lasting.

Wax Type: Yankee Candles primarily use a paraffin wax blend, but some contain natural waxes like palm and soy wax. These can impact burn time, with natural waxes often having a shorter lifespan.

Wick Size: Larger jar and tumbler candles have bigger wicks that melt more wax at a time. Smaller votive and tealight candles have smaller wicks that burn through wax slower over time.

Vessel Size: In general, the larger the candle vessel, the longer it will last. Small votives and tealights contain only a few ounces of wax, while large tumblers and jars can hold 1-2 pounds of wax.

By selecting candles in larger vessels, with large wicks, and strong fragrances, you can maximize the lifespan of your Yankee Candles before they need to be replaced.

For votive candles, vanilla and clean/fresh scents like Linen Breeze tend to last the longest. Avoid votives with more complex bakery or food scents.

Look for tumblers in cinnamon, spice, and woodsy scents. Scents like Autumn Wreath and Winter Woods have excellent burn times in the tumbler size.

Jar Candles

Floral, fruity, and citrus scents often last the longest in jars. Try jasmine, lilac, peach, or lemon scents for best longevity. Avoid food scents like pumpkin or chocolate.

No matter the candle type, repeatedly blowing out and relighting candles will reduce their burn time. Allow candles to completely pool and burn evenly for maximum longevity.

Caring for Candles

Proper storage and maintenance of your candles can help extend their lifespan and preserve their scent. Here are some tips:

• Keep wicks trimmed to 1⁄4 inch before lighting to avoid smoke and promote full wax pool melt.

• Allow melted wax to re-harden before relighting or moving candles to avoid spills.

• Keep wicks centered as they burn by periodically straightening them.

• Store candles with lids in a cool, dark place when not in use.

• Avoid drafts, direct sunlight, and humidity extremes to prevent sweating and cracking.

• Let candles burn completely before relighting to avoid wax tunneling.

• Allow candles to burn for at least 2-3 hours before blowing out to fully liquefy wax.

• Trim away any mushrooming wick end after each use.

With proper care, you can maximize scent throw and burn time from your Yankee Candles.

Avoid drafts which can tunnel the wax. Extinguishers are recommended to snuff out candles when not in use. With proper care, Yankee’s large jar candles can provide weeks of enjoyment.
