A Traditional Indian Wedding In The Swiss Alps
The Love Story
Sonam and Neil’s romance began when they were just three-and-a-half years old, attending the same schools growing up. Their paths reconnected in the tenth grade after Sonam had moved schools a couple of years prior, when they found themselves in similar social circles. However, it wasn’t until seven years after graduation that their connection blossomed into something more. As Sonam recalls, ‘There was always this undercurrent, and I think when it finally happened we were inseparable.
‘ Despite the timing not being quite right at the moment, the couple knew they had found something special just two and a half years later when they got together. Seven months later, Neil popped the question in the breathtaking Maldives, with Sonam’s family also present to celebrate the milestone. According to Sonam, ‘He came over to my house while I was traveling and asked my parents for my hand.
He also invited them to the Maldives and told them that the entire family needed to be there because we’re both super family-orientated.’ The proposal took place on Sonam’s birthday trip to the Maldives, with her family present just days later. She reflects on the experience, saying ‘I think that was the most special part of the proposal.’
The Wedding
The couple’s original plans for a wedding in Bodrum, Turkey in 2020 were scrapped just a month prior due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, their love for each other and for skiing led them to an unconventional yet unforgettable celebration on the Swiss slopes. The picturesque backdrop of Zermatt, with its car-free streets and breathtaking Matterhorn view, was the perfect setting for their special day.
With the region experiencing numerous snowstorms in the lead-up to their wedding, it seemed like a warm and sunny day would be impossible. But fate had other plans – on the days of their events, the skies cleared, and the couple was treated to a stunning display of sunshine and snow-covered peaks. This serendipitous turn of events made their wedding celebration even more unforgettable.
In a nod to Sonam’s Indian heritage, the couple incorporated traditional rituals into their ceremony, including the Seven Pheras around the fire and a beauty ritual involving turmeric paste. The joy and love that filled the mountain air was palpable, making this an experience they will cherish forever.
The Dress
As I slipped into the stunning Indian lehenga, its classic silhouette perfectly capturing the essence of my heritage. The two-piece ensemble featured a delicate top and a flowing skirt, complete with a dupatta that added a touch of drama to the overall look. A long veil cleverly concealed my bun, further embracing my Indian roots. The incorporation of personal elements into my wedding attire didn’t stop there.
My outfit subtly referenced Neil’s proposal, with tiny dolphins and Maldivian sea life motifs woven throughout. The thread used in the lehenga itself boasted an underwater color palette, while my gloves carried a special message – our wedding date, names, and vows were all intricately stitched onto them. It was only fitting that I chose Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla to create my custom-made masterpiece.
Renowned for their meticulous attention to detail, exquisite embroidery, and commitment to preserving Indian cultural heritage, they delivered an outfit that exceeded my wildest expectations. The pièce de résistance? My name and Neil’s, elegantly embroidered in golden thread, accompanied by sparkling crystals that adorned the entire ensemble. It was truly a dream come true.
Advice For Future Brides
Embracing individuality on your special day is crucial. I’d advise every bride-to-be to stay true to their vision and prioritize what brings them joy. Don’t let external factors, such as guest lists or social media pressures, dictate the tone of your wedding. Instead, choose a setting that radiates happiness, surround yourself with people who uplift you, and wear an outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
The most important thing is to make decisions that align with your personal preferences, because ultimately, it’s your day to shine.
Of course, things may not always go according to plan, but I believe it’s essential to approach any setbacks with a sense of perspective. While some compromises are inevitable, it’s crucial not to sacrifice your happiness or values in the process. Remember that your wedding is just one day – what truly matters is the life you’re building together.
